Meanwhile, according to sources, news has been received that Shami is in the race to get the Arjuna Award.

Following his performance in the World Cup 2023, the selection committee has recommended Shami’s name for this year’s prestigious Arjuna Award.

BCCI Made A Special Request To The Sports Ministry:

According to sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a special request to the Sports Ministry. Earlier Shami’s name was not on this list. Arjuna Award is the second-highest sporting honour.

The 33-year-old player has been sensational for India throughout the year. The right-arm fast bowler continued his golden performance at the World Cup in November.

Mohammed Shami took 15 wickets in the World Cup at an average of 12.06 and an economy rate of 5.68. Overall, his name was recorded as the leading wicket-taker of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He had 24 wickets to his name in only seven innings.

Among his key efforts was a brilliant 5/18 against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede. Already under pressure chasing a target of 358, Shami’s arrival at the end of the first powerplay signalled the end for Sri Lanka.

In his five overs, he batted in the middle and lower order. After missing his team’s first four matches, Shami emerged as a star bowler, taking 24 wickets at an average of just 5.26 and 10.70.

Only 4 Players In The History Of The Men’s Game:

Lasith Malinga (56), Mitchell Starc (65), Muttiah Muralitharan (68), and Glenn McGrath (71) have taken more wickets than Shami (55) in the Cricket World Cup. Shami returned in ten fewer matches than any player above him in the list.

Shami is likely to return to the field for India in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa. The first Test will be the Boxing Day clash at Centurion on 26 December. The second will be played in Cape Town on 3 January.
